Principal Tech Lead (Backend oriented)

At Similarweb, we are revolutionizing the way businesses interact with the digital world by revealing to them everything that happens online.

Our unique data and solutions empower thousands of customers globally, including industry giants like Google, eBay, and Adidas, to make game-changing decisions that drive their digital strategies.

In 2021, we went public on the New York Stock Exchange, and we continue to reach new heights! Come work alongside Similarwebbers across the globe who are bright, curious, practical and good people.

We are looking for a Principal Tech Lead to join our team.

Why is this role so important at Similarweb?

As the premier architectural authority across a substantial organization of 5 teams, 26 backend developers, the Principal Tech Lead will directly shape the high-scale backend engines powering Similarweb’s Intelligence products. A core mandate of this role is embedding and advocating for agentic development throughout the SDLC. This position demands elite software craftsmanship, visionary systems design, and high-velocity execution to transform multi-terabyte datasets into real-time enterprise insights while catalyzing group-wide engineering excellence.

So, what will you be doing all day?

As a Principal Tech Lead, your daily impact spans deep-tech execution, organizational mentorship, and bleeding-edge paradigm adoption:

• Architectural Governance: Own the end-to-end design, scalability, and performance of complex backend distributed systems. Ensure architectures are resilient, modular, and optimized for intensive data workloads.
• Agentic Engineering Innovation: Champion and embed Agentic SDLC paradigms, tools and solutions into the engineering lifecycle. Design frameworks that enable autonomous AI agents to build, test, and deploy features end-to-end, while enforcing rigorous quality gates and deterministic production guardrails.
• Cross-Project Orchestration: Maintain an exceptionally large context window to actively guide and facilitate multiple highly technical streams and parallel projects simultaneously without losing focus or delivery speed.
• Guild Leadership & Mentorship: Act as the primary technical sounding board for the engineering community. Lead backend guild sessions, introduce emerging technologies, and actively mentor senior and staff engineers to elevate the group's collective capabilities.
• High-Velocity Execution: Lead by example. When taking on critical path, hands-on tasks, execute with unmatched speed and quality, demonstrating what peak operational efficiency looks like.

The matrix below outlines the exact dimensions of performance and capability required for success in this role:

Competency Pillar	Expectations & Scope
System Architecture	Design, build, and maintain highly scalable backend engines for Similarweb Intelligence products, managing complex data pipelines and high-throughput production systems.
Agentic Engineering	Pioneer and scale Agentic Engineering workflows, tools, and solutions. Enable autonomous agents to build robust end-to-end features while guaranteeing high-end production quality.
Technical Leadership	Act as a deep-dive technical sounding board. Lead specialized engineering guild sessions, mentor senior talent, and foster a culture of continuous learning and development.
Multi-Project Facilitation	Leverage an exceptionally large mental context window to seamlessly orchestrate and facilitate multiple parallel engineering streams without losing execution velocity.

This is the perfect job for someone who:

• Seasoned Architect: Proven track record of designing and scaling complex, large-scale distributed production systems under heavy load.
• Deep-Dive Problem Solver: Innate curiosity and technical depth that makes you the go-to expert with whom peers across the organization want to collaborate and bounce architectural ideas.
• AI & Agentic Pioneer: Deep, practical familiarity with Agentic Engineering concepts, tools, LLM APIs, orchestration frameworks, and prompt-to-production paradigms.
• Natural Mentor: Passionate about cultivating talent, active community engagement, and driving internal knowledge-sharing frameworks.
